  15. The Vocabulator (c) helps you learn nine foreign languages
  16. quickly and easily.

  18. The Vocabulator (c) helps overcome the essential problem with
  19. learning a foreign language - the fact that most people have so
  20. much difficulty acquiring enough vocabulary that they cannot
  21. comprehend the structure and pronunciation of the language which
  22. is being taught by Teacher, Tape, Friend or Lover.
  23.  
  24. The Vocabulator (c) gives you the means to quickly learn a hard
  25. core of around 500 words in a number of languages.
  26.  
  27. The Vocabulator (c) also gives you the ability to add new words
  28. and phrases, change translations to a form which suits your way
  29. of remembering things, or even to generate a learning vocabulary
  30. for a completely new language!

  32. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

  35. The Vocabulator (c) requires an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS2 or EISA 100%
  36. compatible with at least 400kB free memory.
  37.  
  38. The Vocabulator (c) as supplied requires a hard disk with at
  39. least 1 Mb free.
  40.  
  41. To run The Vocabulator (c) from a diskette with less than 1Mb,
  42. you will first have to install the program on a friends' hard
  43. disk, then you may have to delete some language libraries which
  44. you do not need, or make different diskettes for different
  45. groups of languages. Each diskette needs the following files:
  46.  
  47.         VOCAB.EXE     (The Program file)
  48.  
  49.         VOCAB.HLP    (If you need help)
  50.  
  51.         <Language>.*     (Files for languages you wish to use).

  53. The Vocabulator (c) supports any screen which emulates
  54. MONOCHROME, CGA, EGA, VGA, SVGA or HERCULES (c) standards.

  56. Contrast problems may be experienced on systems utilizing a CGA
  57. card with a monochrome screen.
  58.  
  59. The Vocabulator (c) requires MS DOS (c), or IBM DOS (c) of
  60. Version 3.xx or higher.

  62. HOW TO GET THE VOCABULATOR TO RUN

  65. A. IF YOU RECEIVED THE VOCABULATOR THROUGH A BBS

  67. 1. You should have received a single compressed file
  68. VOCAB217.EXE.
  69.  
  70. 2. Make a directory on your hard drive where you want The
  71. Vocabulator (c) to reside. (we suggext "VOCAB").
  72.  
  73. 3. Copy the file VOCAB217.EXE into the just-created directory on
  74. your hard drive.
  75.  
  76. 4. Log into this directory and type "VOCAB217" to uncompress the
  77. files. (You will need approximately 1 MBytes of available space
  78. for all the files).
  79.  
  80. 5. Then type "README" to execute the program.
  81.

  102. 2. Log to the drive which contains these Vocabulator (c) files.

  104. 3. Run the install program by typing "INSTALL".

  106. 4. Select <R>egistration option and print a registration form.

  108. 5. You may also print this manual from the same menu.

  110. 6. Then execute the <I>nstall option from the menu, which
  111. will copy all necessary files onto your hard drive, and give
  112. information on how to uncompress and run the program.

  120. Copy the file BLUEBULL.EXE into a suitable directory on your

  133.  C. AFTER INSTALLATION

  135. Remember to register your copy of The Vocabulator (c) if you
  136. like and plan to use it. To do this, type "README" or run the
  137. program "INSTALL" and select the <R>egistration option, which
  138. will print out a registration form. Complete this form and
  139. return it, together with your registration fee, to the address
  140. on the form.

  142. After the registration form had been printed and mailed, it is
  143. only necessary to type "VOCAB" after logging to the correct
  144. directory.
  145.  
  146. If you have any doubt about your comprehension of the statements
  147. made above, we would strongly recommend that you read the rest
  148. of this manual BEFORE you decide to use the program.

  150. The Vocabulator (c) is distributed under "Shareware".

  152. WHAT IS SHAREWARE?

  155. Shareware gives users a chance to "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY". If you
  156. try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected
  157. to register. Individual programs differ on details- some request
  158. registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
  159. trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
  160. simple right to continue using the software to an updated
  161. program with printed manual.

  163. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and Commercial software,
  164. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  165. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  166. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  167. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  168. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  169. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  170. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  171. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  172. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  173. Shareware.

  176. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  177. whether it's Commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  178. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.

  221. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  222. the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any
  223. purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
  224. consequential, which may result from the use of The Vocabulator (c).

  226. The Vocabulator (c) is a "shareware program" and is provided at
  227. no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with
  228. your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part
  229. of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is
  230. to provide personal computer users with quality software without
  231. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  232. continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  233. useful and find that you are using The Vocabulator (c) and
  234. continue to use The Vocabulator (c) after a reasonable trial
  235. period, you must make a registration payment of $25 to BLUE

  238. just like a book. An example is that this software may be used

  242. another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons

  246. for their copies of The Vocabulator (c) within 30 days of first
  247. use or their license is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may
  248. be made by contacting BLUE BULL.

  250. Anyone distributing The Vocabulator (c) for any kind of
  251. remuneration must first contact BLUE BULL at the address below
  252. for authorization. This authorization will be automatically
  253. granted to distributors recognized by the ASP as adhering to its
  254. guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
  255. begin offering The Vocabulator (c) immediately (However BLUE
  256. BULL must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
  257. up-to-date with the latest version of The Vocabulator (c)).

  352. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE VOCABULATOR WORKS

  355. The Vocabulator (c) is a program which helps you overcome one of
  356. the biggest problems in learning a new language -- the fact that
  357. you have difficulty in learning pronunciation and structure
  358. because you do not know enough VOCABULARY.
  359.  
  360. The Vocabulator (c) helps you overcome this problem by giving
  361. you a "flip card" display of common words and phrases.
  362.  
  363. The Vocabulator (c) uses Industry Standard Menu Selection and
  364. Navigation standards. The Cursor (arrow) keys will move you
  365. around the screens to edit and view data. <F1> will invoke
  366. screens providing assistance relating to the function you are
  367. currently in. <Esc> will abort the current operation, and return
  368. you to the previous higher level of the program.

  370. The various Vocabulator (c) options are selected by a "Menu" of
  371. options. You select the option by moving the highlight to the
  372. option you wish to execute, and then press <Enter>. A quick
  373. method of making this selection is also provided simply press
  374. the first letter of the menu option you wish to execute, and the
  375. option will execute directly. The various Vocabulator (c)
  376. options are described below.

  378. THE PROMPTING ROUTINES:
  379.  
  380. The Vocabulator (c) can prompt with YOUR LANGUAGE WORD, where
  381. you want to translate into the foreign language, or with the
  382. FOREIGN LANGUAGE WORD when you want to translate back into your
  383. own language.
  384.  
  385. You can speed up or slow down the prompt speed as your
  386. proficiency in the language improves. You do this by pressing
  387. the up and down arrow keys while in the prompting routines.
  388.  
  389. As you begin to learn more words, you will find that some
  390. well-known words continue to prompt, which tends to waste time,
  391. and makes you feel frustrated. Press <Enter> when such a word is
  392. displayed in the prompt routines, and the word will be removed
  393. until you decide to restore it.
  394.  
  395. This "hiding" routine is also useful when you have just started
  396. with the language - you may well find that there are so many
  397. words that they are not repeated often enough for you to learn
  398. them quickly. All you do then is press <Enter> when the more
  399. difficult words are displayed, until you have a small enough
  400. list of words which you can learn quickly. When you have learnt
  401. these words well, reinstate the other words in order to learn
  402. them.
  403.  
  404. During prompting, you may often find that you are confused, and
  405. wish to think about, or look at previous or similar words. To do
  406. this, press <Space> in the prompting routines, which will halt
  407. the prompting process. You can then look at the previous few
  408. words which are still displayed on screen, or browse through
  409. your vocabulary database by pressing <F1>.

  411. ADD/EDIT WORDS ROUTINE:
  412.  
  413. The Vocabulator (c) is supplied with databases of about 500
  414. words for a number of common languages. This list has been
  415. recommended to us as THE MOST USEFUL list for a beginner in a
  416. language. If you develop your knowledge beyond the scope of this
  417. list, this routine allows you to add, edit, or delete words as
  418. you wish.

  420. You can even generate your own new language database by means of
  421. this routine as follows:
  422.  
  423. Exit to DOS, and log to the Vocabulator (c) Directory  Type
  424. "COPY BLANK.MAS <Name of your language>.VOC" Type "COPY
  425. BLANK.ORD <Name of your language>.ORD"  Re-enter the Vocabulator
  426. (c), select your new language, and build up a database of the
  427. words you want to learn.

  429. REINSTATE HIDDEN WORDS:
  430.  
  431. If you have hidden words in the prompt routine, and now want
  432. them to be returned to the prompting list, execute this option
  433. to restore them.
  434.  
  435. PRINT WORDS:
  436.  
  437. If you want a hard copy of your Vocabulary database, use this
  438. routine to printout the words.
  439.  
  440. CORRECT CORRUPTED FILES:
  441.  
  442. In the unlikely event that you find that your data seems to be
  443. corrupted, and words seem to be missing or duplicated, use this
  444. option to attempt to correct these problems. NOTE: These
  445. problems should normally only occur after a power failure while
  446. you are editing words.

  448. BACKUP DATA:
  449.  
  450. If you have made modifications to any of your language
  451. libraries, you will want to make regular backups to floppy
  452. disks. To do this, make sure you have a formatted disk in drive
  453. A:, and then execute this option, which will copy your selected
  454. Language Library to the floppy disk.
